The Impact of Domestic Abuse on Children

Covid-19 has had a significant impact on domestic abuse, statistics revealed that domestic violence has surged since the lockdown. The UK’s largest domestic abuse charity, Refuge, reported a 700% increase in calls to its helpline in a single day. There has been an increase in support (helplines, group programmes) for victims and perpetrators but the children that have witnessed the abuse are forgotten. We know that these children are not able to access specialist support. Witnessing domestic abuse can result in long term emotional and mental health problems for children which impacts on their ability to engage in education and employment.

Innovating Minds is committed to supporting children affected by domestic abuse and our 'Healing Together' programme supports primary and secondary school children to understand the role of emotions and how they can manage them using healthy coping strategies.

Our free weekly webinars are supporting mental health leads and senior leaders to create mentally healthy environments. On 6th May 2020, Jane Evans (Childhood Trauma Expert) will be joining us to talk about domestic abuse, the impact it has on children and how schools can support these children.
